ABOUT

Hello!

I’m Kara, a local artist, originally from the small village of Liberty center, Ohio, USA and currently residing in Columbus, Ohio. I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from The Ohio State University. I reside here with my husband, six children and dog Winston.

After a series of unforeseen life events, including the birth of my two eldest children and losing their father, I ended up going back to school to receive my teaching license in Visual Art as well as my Masters degree in Education, with a specialization in Special Education. I found myself teaching inner-city children of all ages with special needs, but ended my eleven year focus with this population, specifically dedicating myself to those who were Emotionally Disturbed. My most recent three years of teaching have been back in the Visual Art world with High School students. I have the pleasure of teaching Painting and Drawing, Digital Photography, and Ceramics in the Columbus City School district. My first love always has been and always will be Painting and Drawing, where I now incorporate both into my current body of work.

My art is categorized as Modern/Contemporary Abstract Painting. I work primarily with acrylics on paper, canvas and wood panels. I occasionally find myself using paper as an additive to my mixed media paintings to create texture. Each piece begins with a single or series of marks, then adding color that’s inspired by personal experiences that bring the painting to life. It is a personal journey taken until I suddenly feel it’s complete. My work is an honest reflection of who I am, where I’ve been, and where I may be going. It exemplifies gestural qualities with hints of whimsical resting areas, allowing for the viewer to engage in a chaotic yet peaceful experience.

I hope you enjoy my work…

I hope it evokes an emotion in you…

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”  - Edgar Degas
